Professor Hoffman teaches three courses:

Corporate Responsibility:  The Role of Business in Society

This is an upper-level course designed for students concentrating in business, management, economics, law, or public policy.  There are no prerequisites. The course focuses primarily on large, publicly-traded corporations and examines three main areas: (1)  The role of public corporations in the American and global economy; ( 2)  The duty of public corporations to shareholders versus stakeholders; and ( 3)  The range of corporate policy issues facing companies today, including mandates to advance or reflect greater sustainability; environmental integrity; human rights; diversity; inclusion; ethics, and fair labor standards globally, among other things.  In short, we examine the evolving set of societal expectations that corporations should behave in a way that meets or exceeds the legal, ethical and social requirements imposed by our laws and regulations.  Related themes include corporate governance, corporate accountability and corporate citizenship.

Marketing, Advertising and Public Policy

This is an inter-disciplinary course designed to provide students with a solid overview of current themes in marketing, advertising and public policy. The course examines the impact of public policy on commercial marketing and advertising practices in today's new media environment.  We review the role of government in the regulation and limitation of marketing and advertising, particularly the roles and rulings of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on contemporary marketing issues.  It also examines the First Amendment as it applies to commercial speech and its evolving interpretation by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Contemporary Corporate Communications

This is an interactive course designed to provide students with a solid understanding of contemporary corporate communications practices, methods and strategies.  It examines present-day challenges companies face in light of heightened expectations from shareholders, stakeholders, policymakers, employees and the media.  The course also examines the importance of corporate communications to the implementation of corporate strategy; investor relations; advertising; media relations and crisis management.
